Brush, Brush, Brush! Why Healthy Teeth Make Achieving a Straighter Smile Easier
Learn why brushing is crucial with braces or Invisalign®. Discover tips to keep your smile healthy and avoid common dental issues during treatment.

Why Healthy Teeth Make Achieving a Straighter Smile That Much Easier
Why is brushing your teeth so important during braces or clear aligner treatment? Keeping your smile clean while straightening your teeth is crucial. Let’s explore why it matters so much — and what can happen if this vital step gets skipped.
Braces, Invisalign®, and Hidden Food Traps
- Braces: The Snack Attack Challenge
Braces are like little food magnets! All those wires and brackets create plenty of nooks and crannies where bits of food can hide. When those crumbs go unnoticed, it’s a feast for bacteria. - Clear Aligners: Still Gotta Clean 'Em!
Clear aligners might look low-maintenance, but they trap food and plaque, too. Anytime you eat or drink something sugary, residue can linger on your teeth and attachments — and aligners seal it in place.
The Consequences of Poor Oral Hygiene
Neglecting to brush thoroughly can lead to several dental issues while you’re wearing braces or clear aligners. Here’s what can happen if you don’t keep up great brushing:
- Plaque Buildup
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that clings to teeth. It loves to munch on sugars and then produces acid that attacks your tooth enamel. - Tooth Decay (aka Cavities)
These acids wear away enamel, leading to cavities, toothaches, and fillings (the not-fun kind). - White Spots Everywhere!
Those pesky acids can also create permanent white marks on your teeth. Even after the braces come off, the spots stay behind as a reminder that brushing matters. - Gingivitis
Plaque can irritate your gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding. “When left untreated, gum inflammation can eventually lead to bone loss or even tooth loss, which is something we always want to prevent,” explains Dr Steve Moate.
Brushing Tips for Braces and Clear Aligner Champs
- Soft-bristled toothbrush: Gentle on gums and effective around appliances.
- Interdental brushes: Perfect for cleaning under wires and between brackets.
- Floss: Even trickier with braces, but essential. Super floss makes it easier by threading between teeth.
- Water flossers: High-pressure water flushes out plaque and debris. “I have one at home and recommend them to a lot of patients,” Dr Moate shares.
- Fluoridated toothpaste: Extra protection against decay and gum disease.
- Brush After Every Snack: Even the small ones.
- Take Your Time: 2–4 minutes twice a day. A timer helps keep kids on track.
- Brushing Technique: Angle the brush along the gumline (up for upper teeth, down for lowers) to clean plaque away.
Extra Tips for Invisalign® Wearers
- Brush and Rinse Before Putting Aligners Back In: Even a quick rinse helps if you can’t brush straight away.
- Clean Those Aligners: – Use special cleaning solutions or gentle brushing to keep them fresh.
